Communications, Navigation and Surveillance
The Communications, Navigation and Surveillance Service (CNS) is responsible formanaging and maintaining voice and data communication infrastructures, radio navigationaids, and radar and ADS surveillance systems within the Oceanic FIR. This service isessential to supporting air traffic and aeronautical information services, ensuring thatsystems and equipment meet the highest requirements for safety, reliability, continuity,availability (active and passive redundancy), and service quality (integrity).
CNS Structure
- Communication Systems Maintenance Department (DMSC/ATS):
- Responsible for organizing and planning preventive and corrective maintenance of communication and ATS systems.
- Coordinates activities to ensure continuous functionality of communication and automation systems, guaranteeing their availability and operational readiness.
- Radio Navigation Aid and Surveillance Systems Maintenance Department (DMSRA):
- Responsible for radio navigation aids and radar and ADS surveillance equipment, which are critical for accurate and safe aircraft navigation.
- Plans and executes maintenance activities to ensure these systems remain reliable and operational, providing air traffic control with precise and up-to-date aircraft position and movement data.
- Airport Communications and Navigation Units (NCNS):
- Extensions of the CNS service at international airports, responsible for maintaining communication, navigation, surveillance, meteorology, and IT support equipment.
- Ensure service availability and continuity at both airports and aerodromes.
Main CNS Activities
- Operational Activities:
- Real-time supervision, surveillance, and control of technical systems using specialized electronic CNS/ATM equipment.
- Ensure continuous monitoring of operations and prompt identification and resolution of any anomalies.
- Maintenance Activities:
- Execution of preventive and corrective maintenance, as well as modification and upgrading of electronic systems supporting CNS/ATM.
- Preventive maintenance ensures optimal equipment performance, while corrective maintenance addresses faults, guaranteeing high service availability and reliability.
- Installation and Engineering Activities:
- Oversight of projects involving specification, design, validation, integration, testing, and acceptance of new systems and equipment.
- Includes safety assessments, calibration, certification, optimization, and system upgrades.
- Ensures all CNS systems comply with the highest standards of safety and operational efficiency.
